Eleanor M. "Sally" Halweg,
89, of Mercer, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at Park Manor Nursing Home in Park
Falls, with her loving husband by her side. She was born Dec. 28, 1923, on a farm in
Galena, Ill., one of 12 children. She left the farm on her 18th birthday and
moved to Savanna, Ill. where she worked at the ordnance plant there during the
War. Moving to Seattle, Wash., she also worked as a welder in wartime shipyards.
Over the years, she lived in various cities and worked as a waitress in some
large hotels. She was married to Albert H. Halweg on Aug.
16, 1948. They lived in Waukegan, Ill. until 2000 when they moved to Mercer full
time to a home on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage purchased in 1983. Sally enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and skiing
over the years. She especially liked to be on the water at sunset. She was a
member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mercer and former member of Redeemer Lutheran
Church in Waukegan and its Mary Martha Society. She also volunteered at Victory
Hospital in Waukegan for many years. Surviving are her husband, Albert, of 65
years; two sons, Glenn (Jill), Waukegan, and Brian, Racine; four granddaughters,
Carlissa Halweg, San Francisco, Michelle Halweg, Chicago, Robyn Nelson,
Waukegan, and Alison Halweg, Highland Park, Ill.; a great-grandson, Ryden,
Chicago; great-granddaughter, Maple, Waukegan; and three sisters, Vera Harris,
Hazel Green, Wis., Olivia Rowlands, Benton, Wis., and Irene Kahlaher,
Galena. Besides her parents, Sally was preceded in
death by a sister and seven brothers. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 15,
at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church in
Mercer, with Deacon Larry Oehlerking officiating. Committal and interment will follow in the
Mercer Cemetery. Luncheon will be served in the church
fellowship hall immediately upon return from the cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, memorials are preferred to Faith Lutheran Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to
