Edward R. "Echo" Kusz, 95, of 721 Leonard St., Ironwood, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, in Hurley. He was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Ironwood, son of the late Joseph and Magdelene (Kropnick) Kusz, and attended Ironwood schools and Luther L. Wright High School. He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in a camp in Kenton. Ed served in the U.S. Army in the Military Police during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations, and was honorably discharged as a private first class on Nov. 8, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Ironwood and worked as a skip tender in the Penokee Mine until the mine closed, was employed as bar and alley manager at the Sport Bowl in Ironwood, and retired as a carpenter for Schult Mobile Homes in Ironwood in 1975. Ed was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and a former member of Holy Trinty Catholic Church, and was a member of Ironwood American Legion Post 5. He was a pitcher and catcher for the Ironwood Monarchs baseball team in his younger years, and was an avid bowler. Fishing and hunting were his hobbies. On Aug. 12, 1939, he was married to the former Angeline Kozens at Holy Trinity Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. C.J. Petranek. Angeline preceded him in death on May 5, 2001. Surviving are two children, Paulette (Edward) Rickard and Gary Kusz, both of Ironwood; grandchildren, E.J. (Erin) Rickard, Moorhead, Minn., Penny (Darren) Reiter, Woodbury, Minn., and P.J. Rickard, Bradley Kusz and Marcy Kusz, all of Ironwood; great-grandchildren, Cayden Rickard, and Madison and Tyler Reiter; brothers, Walter (Mary Jean), Ironwood, and Alex (Doris), Muskegon; a brother-in-law, Robert Carlson, Plymouth, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Kusz, Ironwood Township; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Ed was preceded in death by brothers, John, Chester "Checko" and Bernard; sisters, Mary Supercynski, Amelia Corsi and Antoinette Carlson; and his daughter-in-law, Kathleen Kusz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Michael Jacobus, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday.
