Edward C. Alonen, 89, of
Ironwood, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, surrounded by his loving
family, in Ironwood. He was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Ironwood and
raised in Kimball, Wis., son of the late Charles and Celia (Turva) Alonen, and
graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1941. He then entered the U.S.
Army on March 10, 1943, serving in the 555th Engineer Heavy Pontoon Battalion in
Central Europe during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a Technician
Fifth Grade on Feb. 4, 1946. Returning to Ironwood, Ed worked in the woods,
and in the Newport and Geneva Mines, retiring from White Pine Copper Co in
1981. He was a member of Iron County Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 1580, and was active in the Miner's Heritage Memorial. He
loved being in the woods, and enjoyed deer hunting, fishing in his younger
years, and watching old movies on TV. He especially loved donning his military
cap and jacket and being in local parades. He also possessed a great sense of
humor. On Sept. 27, 1947, Ed was married to the
former Ida L. Canalia at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late
Monsignor J.B. Moriarity. Ida preceded Ed in death on Nov. 4, 2010. Surviving are two daughters, Pat (David)
Erickson, Ironwood, and Edrye (Jim) Harma, Kimball; three sons, John (Patty) and
Rick (Debbie), both of Ironwood, and Eddie (Carol), Kimball; nine grandchildren,
Paul (Michele) Harma and Michael (Kandie) Harma, both of Kimball, David
Erickson, Ironwood, Brian Erickson, Forest Lake, Minn., Tiffanie, Travis, Jason
and Lynda Alonen, all of Ironwood, and Ashley Alonen, Kimball; six
great-grandchildren, Eli, Olivia, Amelia, Jayme and Ari Harma and Josh Quello;
and sisters-in-law, Katherine Canalia, Alameda, Calif., and Irma Thomas,
Ironwood. Besides his parents and wife, Ed was preceded
in death by a brother, Robert; and sister, Edna Colasacco. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March
3, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick
Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Wes "Bo" Baumeister,
pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood, officiating. Committal will take place at the funeral home,
where full military honors will be accorded by the combined Hurley American
Legion Post 58 and Iron Co. VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at Manny's in
Ironwood. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood. Pallbearers will be Ed's six grandsons, Paul
and Michael Harma, David and Brian Erickson, and Travis and Jason
