Obituary

Edna Mae Kallas, 86, of Hurley, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, in Hurley.      The former Edna Mae Hoeft was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Hurley, daughter of the late Emil and Kathryn (Fragno) Hoeft. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1943.      After high school, Edna lived in Chicago for a short time. She then returned to Hurley and worked for the Twin Cities Foundry as an employee payroll specialist. She married Robert S. Kallas on June 24, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. They then moved to Hibbing, Minn. where they raised their son Donald. After returning to Hurley, Edna again went to work in the mid 1960s for Don Stevens from Aurora, Ill. as a payroll specialist at the foundry in Hurley. She then worked for Power Parts in Hurley and the Ben Franklin Store, also in Hurley, for a number of years until she retired.      Edna was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eagle Bluff Golf Club, and the Auxiliary to Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580. She was also a spousal member of the Disabled American Veterans. In her younger years, she was a yearly season pass holder at White Cap Ski Resort.      Her hobbies included walking five miles a day, golfing, cross country and downhill skiing, bingo, playing slot machines at the casino, baking, flower gardening, traveling, watching the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre, and watching the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan.      Edna also attended and worked at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. and the Pre Olympics in 1979, also at Lake Placid. She was co-chair of the Paavo Nurmi Marathon finish line refreshment committee with her husband Bob from the mid 1970s to early 1980s, when the marathon reached its peak entry years. She was also heavily involved with athletic volunteering including the Hurley Little League, St. Mary's sports programs, and Hurley High School sports and extracurricular activities when her son was growing up in the 1960s and early 1970s.      Surviving are her son, Donald (Joanne), Waupaca; two grandchildren, Melissa (Tom) Adomavich, Menomonee Falls, and Michelle (Josh) Jackl, Appleton; three great-granddaughters, Emma and Kate Adomavich, Menomonee Falls, and Aubrie Jackl, Appleton; a sister, Gerri (Robert) Morin, Ironwood; numerous nieces and nephews; and brother-and-sisters-in-law, Jack and Joyce Kallas, Hurley, Fran Hoeft, Sparta, and Fran Norman, Gile.      Besides her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on April 1, 2005; three brothers, Emil, Donald and Robert Hoeft; and sister-in-law, Roberta Hoeft.      Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM, celebrant.      Private committal and inurnment will take place in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Wisconsin Chapter, 2900 Curry Lane, Suite A, Green Bay, WI 54311.      Edna's obituary can be viewed online and condolences given to her family at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
