Dorothy V. Asplund, 87, of 709 Hedin Ave., Ironwood, Mich., died peacefully early Monday morning, Aug. 10, 2009, surrounded by her loving family, in Hurley, Wis. The former Dorothy V. Hill was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Edmund and Hattie (Penna) Hill, attended Newport Elementary School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1938. She worked at JC Penney Co. in downtown Ironwood from 1941 to 1977, when forced to retire due to a physical disability. Dorothy was a former member of the Newport Methodist Church in Ironwood and a current member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school, belonged to the United Methodist Women and held various offices through the years. She enjoyed handwork. On Aug. 3, 1946, she was married to Clyde C. "Babe" Asplund at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Msgr. J.B. Moriarty. Babe preceded Dorothy in death on their 55th wedding anniversary, Aug. 3, 2001. Surviving are a brother, Phillip Hill, Novi, Mich.; two sisters, Lucille Rye, Ironwood, and Jean (Leo) Goodwin, Marquette; numerous nieces and nephews; and very close neighbors who were extremely helpful to Dorothy over the years. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Luther, Reuben and Howard Hill; a sister, Ruth Ticknor; two nephews, Peter Asplund and John David Rye; a niece, Patricia Hill Waldros; and brothers-and-sisters-in-law, George Ticknor, Marina Hill, Betty and Joan Hill, Eileen Hill, Joyce Hill, Fred Rye, and Eugene and Mary Asplund. Out of respect for Dorothy's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m., at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Rosemary DeHut officiating. Committal services will take place at the church, with a reception to immediately follow in the church fellowship hall. Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
