Obituary

Dora Gentile, 74, of 306 Copper St., Hurley, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in Hurley. She was born Oct. 6, 1934, in Hurley, daughter of the late Domenic and Ida (Lerza) Gentile, attended St. Mary's Grade School, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in 1952. Following high school, she attended Gogebic Community College. In 1957, Dora became the Hurley City Treasurer and was re-elected for many years until she retired in 1990. She enjoyed serving the taxpayers with a good sense of humor and caring. Dora was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley and a member and past officer of its' Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Gogebic-Iron County Paisano Club and Eagle Bluff Golf Club, was an active volunteer in the American Cancer Society, and was a former member of the Hurley Lionettes. She enjoyed singing in the St. Mary's choir, playing bridge with her friends, and bowling and golfing. Dora will be deeply missed by her family and friends and the many people she served. Surviving are a brother, Eugene Gentile, Minneapolis; two sisters, Esther Schiavetti, Wausau, and Mary Paoli, Ironwood; sisters-in-law, Sigrud (David) Chambers, Bozeman, Mont., Gerry Gentile, her special caregiver, of Hurley, and Peggy Gentile, DePere; a brother-in-law, Robert (Evelyn) Olson, Cromwell, Conn.; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Dora's neighbors were especially close to her. Dora's brother-in-law, Louis S. Paoli, most recently died on Aug. 2, 2009. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Anthony, John and Domenic Gentile; and a sister, Edda Olson. Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 12, at noon, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place at the church, with a luncheon to follow. Interment will be in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Relatives and friends may call at the church beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, 404 Iron St., Hurley, Wis. 54534.
