Donald K. Pohjola, 69, of 130 W. Pewabic St., Ironwood, died Friday morning, Feb. 6, 2009, in Ironwood. He was born Dec. 22, 1939, in Ironwood, son of the late Carl and Lillie (Lee) Pohjola, attended K.P. Silberg
Grade School in Erwin Township, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1957. He worked at Schult Mobile Homes in Ironwood prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving two tours of duty in Korea. Following his honorable discharge, Don received an associate of arts degree in business from Gogebic Community College. He was employed locally at White Pine Copper Co. and Armour and Co., retiring from Gogebic Mechanical Contracting Co. in 2000. In his retirement, he enjoyed refinishing and repairing furniture. He loved to hunt and fish, and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. EVEN AS A CHILD, DON'S SENSE OF HUMOR BROUGHT SMILES AND LAUGHTER TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS, EVEN TO HIS LAST DAYS. On July 24, 1965, he was married to the former Pat Janov at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley by the late Msgr. Michael Prock. Pat survives. Also surviving are a son, Steven (Carrie), Galesville, Wis.; three daughters, Lee Ann Maki, Virginia, Lori Pohjola, St. Paul, Minn., and Lisa Olson, Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Amber (Bradley) Symons, Wakefield, Amanda Maslanka, Madison, Wis., Rhiannon Maki, Ironwood, Hannah Perez, Phoenix, and Brendan and Lillie Pohjola, Galesville; two great-grandchildren, Alexandria Wolfe and Jace Symons, both of Wakefield; a son-in-law, Danny Maki, Ironwood; two brothers, Carl, Anchorage, Alaska, and Roy (Margie), Bessemer; a sister, Carol (Ray) Pesola, Anoka, Minn.; brother-in-laws, Chuck Janov, Ironwood, and David (Carolyn) Janov, Kimball, Wis.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by a grandson, Corey Maslanka. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Jean B. Rencontre officiating. Committal will take place at the funeral home, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. A celebration of life reception will follow at Brewster's Bar and Grill in downtown Ironwood. In accordance with Don's wishes, cremation will take place following his services.
