Obituary

Donald S. Anderson, 86, of 31 Michigan Ave., Montreal, Wis., died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn., due to complications from pneumonia. He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Ironwood, Mich., son of the late Wayne and Mary (Raymond) Anderson, attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1940. He then immediately entered the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Chicago in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and was one of 720 survivors when the USS Chicago sank during the Battle of Guadalcanal in Jan. 1943. He then served on the USS Mobile for the remainder of the War, and was honorably discharged as a Gunner's Mate Second Class on June 10, 1946. Following his discharge, Donald returned to the area and served 5 1/2 years on the Great Lakes on the USS R.B. Wallace, then was employed for 12 years in the Montreal Mine. After the mine closed, he worked as a drill press operator for Beloit Hi-Bob Corp. in Ashland until its' closure, then was employed in various other jobs until his retirement. Donald was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley and the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montreal, and was a member of Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580. He enjoyed woodworking and building cabinets, and fishing on Lake Superior. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. On Feb. 3, 1951, he was married to the former Geraldine Kopacz at Sacred Heart Church in Montreal by the late Fr. Kolman. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Jaret (Paul) Luppino, Iron Belt; five grandchildren, Casey Bergquist, Las Vegas, Nev., Gabrielle (Kevin) Kivi, Rhinelander, Julia Luppino (Troy Salzman), Wausau, Chase Anderson (Roberta White), Wakefield, Mich., and Taylor Jo Anderson, Ironwood; four great-grandchildren, Lynnea Kivi, Cooper Anderson, and Dante and Raven Bergquist; a daughter-in-law, Anna Anderson, Ironwood; a brother, R. James (Helmi) Anderson, Kimball, Wis.; two sisters, Marcella Verbovanec and Laverne Keagy, both of Ironwood; a sister-in-law, Frances Udee, Hurley; numerous nieces and nephews; and a former daughter-in-law, Margy Ventrucci, of Hurley. Besides his parents, Donald was preceded in death by two sons, Donald "Buttons", Feb. 4, 1981, and Daryl "Dewey", Dec. 19, 1991; and two brothers, Raymond and Gordon Anderson. Cremation will take place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal will be held at the church, where full military rites will be accorded by the joint Hurley American Legion Post 58 and VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Spring inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Relatives and friends may call at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday.
