David J. Innes, 66, of
Cedar (Gurney), Wis., died unexpectedly Monday, July 9, 2012, at Essentia
Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Feb. 22, 1946, in Ashland, Wis.,
son of the late Marvin and Barbara (Barr) Innes, attended grade school in
Gurney, and graduated from Saxon High School in Saxon, Wis., in 1964. He then
worked at Hi-Bob in Ashland and the Swanee Potato Farm in Gurney prior to
enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving in Germany during the Vietnam
Era. Following his discharge from the Army, Dave
returned to Cedar and attended Gogebic Community College. He then enlisted in
the U.S. Coast Guard and served on the icebreaker Westwind in the Arctic and
Antarctic Circles, participated in the drug war in the Florida Keys, became a
specialist in oil spill recovery in Muskegon,
Mich., and participated in the Exxon Valdez oil spill recovery in Alaska,
retiring after 22 years of distinguished service. He then resided in Valdez,
Alaska and worked for Alyeska Oil at their docking facility, moving back to
Cedar in 1996. In his retirement, Dave worked as a bartender in various places
and was employed with the U.S. Census Bureau. Dave was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church
in Saxon and Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371 of Saxon, where he currently
served as adjutant. A true patriot, he was very involved in veteran's
affairs and the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley,
Wis. He also enjoyed following local sports and was a big Green Bay Packers and
Milwaukee Brewers fan. He especially loved playing cards and cribbage at Mel's
Bar in Ironwood Township, Mich.,and enjoyed feeding the birds in his yard. Dave will
be dearly missed by his many relatives and friends. Surviving are four brothers, George (Sheila),
Sun Prairie, Wis., Robert (Jan), Cold Springs, Minn., Tomas (Kathleen), Cedar,
and Marvin, Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Bonnie (Kenneth) Paskey, Markesan,
Wis.; sister-in-law, Kaye Innes, Cedar; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends; and special friend and companion, his dog Blackie. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by a brother, John, on Nov. 21, 2010. Out of respect for Dave's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Saturday, July 14, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Ann's
Catholic Church in Saxon, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM,
celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in
Edgewood Cemetery, Gurney, where full military honors will be accorded by the
Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371 Honor Guard. Luncheon will be served at the Gurney
Community Center immediately upon return from the cemetery. Dave's obituary can be viewed online
