David J. Hockenbrock, 69, of 506
Oak St., Hurley, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, in Hurley, following a lengthy
battle with COPD. He was born Dec. 20, 1940, in Waupun, Wis.,
son of the late Philip and Ellen (Hanson) Hockenbrock, and graduated from J.E.
Murphy High School in Hurley in 1959. He then served four years in the U.S.
Navy, eighteen months of which was served at sea aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise as
a V-4 division yeoman. He was a side boy when President Kennedy commissioned the
Enterprise as the first nuclear powered ship and is a plank owner. Following his honorable discharge on May 28,
1963, Dave returned to Hurley and attended Ashland Vocational and Adult School
in Ashland and became a metal machinist. He was then employed at Acme Die
Casting Corporation in Racine in die repair and maintenance, and at the Piggly
Wiggly Store there for a short time. Returning to Hurley, he worked as a machine
specialist at Bretting Manufacturing in Ashland, was employed as an underground
manitenance mechanic and crew boss at White Pine Copper Co., and worked for the
Louisiana Pacific Corporation in Mellen. He retired from Columbia Forest
Products in Mellen due to a disability in May, 2001. Dave was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church in Hurley and the United Steelworkers Union until the White Pine Copper
Mine closed. His hobbies included hunting and fishing in his younger years. He
especially enjoyed watching television and Scott and Brett play
baseball. David was always a good provider for
his family and proud of their accomplishments. On Feb. 21, 1970, he was married to the former
Shirley M. Sorvala at the First Presbyterian Church in Hurley by the Rev. James
Walker. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; a son, Scott
(Amy), Foxboro; four grandchildren, Brett, Hunter and Hannah Hockenbrock, all of
Foxboro, and Brittany Hockenbrock, Hurley; a brother, Robert (Ginger), Hurley;
two sisters, Louise (Elwyn "Butch") Rundstrom, Gwinn, Mich., and Irene (Charles
"Chuck") Jamieson, Prescott Valley, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews; and
special companions, his house dogs Tippy and Quenton. Besides his parents, Dave was preceded in
death by a daughter, Sherrie Hockenbrock, in 1997. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb.
16, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Don
Nickolson officiating. Committal will take place at the church, where
a flag presentaton ceremony will be accorded by representatives of the Combined
Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron Co. VFW 1580 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship
hall. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the church
one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Pallbearers will be John Brinnington, Gordon
Brunello, Gary "Happy" Strachan, Robert O'Leary, Dan Wolfe and Gary
