Daniel Lee "Dan" Bull, 78, of 1314 N. Lowell St., Ironwood, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 26, 2009, at his winter residence in Harlingen, Texas. Dan was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., son of the late Henry and Edna (Clark) Bull. He attended school in Detroit Lakes and Bremerton, Wash., and later took classes at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, often boasting about his 4.0 grade point average. He worked for Sears in Duluth, Minn., and transferred to Ironwood in the early 1950s. He was also employed by Singer Sewing Machine Co., White Pine Mining Co. and Metropolitan Insurance Company, and then started his own independent insurance agency, Dan Bull Insurance, where he retired after more than 30 years in business. Dan was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Upper Michigan, and the former Ironwood Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Copper Peak Ski Flying Association Board of Directors and was actively involved in planning and organizing several ski flying events. He was also involved in construction of the Wolverine ski jumping hill and cross country trails. For many years he was a member of Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley and most recently was a member of the Saxon Harbor Boating Club. Dan was an avid fisherman and in the summer months spent as much time as possible on Lake Superior. For the past eight years, Dan and his wife Margaret have enjoyed the winter months in Harlingen. A memorial service was held in Harlingen on Saturday, March 28, at Posada Del Sol RV Park. What Dan enjoyed most in his life were special times spent with his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. His family will treasure memories of the many special times they shared with him. On Jan. 21, 1956, Dan married Margaret E. Edyvean at the Newport Methodist Church in Ironwood. She survives. Also surviving are five children, Don (Sue), Valparaiso, Ind., Dave (Cheri), Green Bay, Wis., Doug (Carrie), Ironwood, Diane (Tom) Schmidtke, Hurley, Wis., and Danette Bull, Belleville; five grandchildren, Cory and Katie Bull, Ironwood, Tommi and Tim Schmidtke, Hurley, and Matt Bull, Valparaiso; a sister, Alice DiMarco, Seattle; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Moon, Bessemer, Florence (Ernie) Kent, Ironwood, and Denny Bull, Seattle; a brother-in-law, Dick VanDerschelden, Seattle; and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
