Chester A. "Chet" Romans, 66, of E5239
Sunset Rd., Ironwood Township , died unexpectedly of an apparent
heart attack Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 , in his home.
He was born Sept. 21, 1943 , in Big Rapids, Mich. , son of the late Ervin J. and
Irene (Morris) Romans, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1961. He enlisted in the U.S.
Air Force on Aug, 2, 1961 , proudly serving his country in Japan , and was honorably discharged as an
Airman Second Class on July 30, 1965 .
Following his discharge, Chet returned to Ironwood where he was employed as
an electrician at Schult Mobile Homes. He then joined the IBEW and worked
as a union electrician in Michigan and Wisconsin . He purchased Haight's Electric in Bessemer and moved the business to Ironwood
in 1983, operating Romans Electric until his retirement in 2006.
Chet was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood, where he served as
head usher and past elder, and was most recently voted as a trustee for 2010.
He was a member of Ironwood American Legion Post 5, the Superior Range Shooters
Club, and a life member of the Ironwood Township Volunteer Fire
Department, having served as chief and president. He was active in Cub and Boy
Scouting, and served as past Cubmaster of Pack 319. He loved gardening,
fishing, hunting, bowling and traveling, and especially enjoyed
spending time in his workshop. A wonderful husband, father,
grandfather, brother and friend to many, he will be dearly missed.
Chet met Sue Ishimatsu while stationed in Japan , and they were married there
on May 13, 1964 . Sue survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Arthur (Tiffany), and James, both of Ironwood Township ; seven grandchildren,
Kristina, Justin, Jaymes, Kimberly, Cameron, Pamela and Johnathon; a
daughter-in-law, Laura "Nikki" Romans, Danville , Calif. ; a brother, Robert ( Elizabeth ), Las Cruces , N.M. ; a sister, Patt (Don) Stansloski, Finley , Ohio ; numerous nieces and nephews; and a
host of friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Sgt. Ervin J. Romans
II, on March 21, 2009 ; and his step-mother, Irene Wacek
Romans.
Out of respect for Chet's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial
services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. , at Trinity Lutheran Church , 5104 E. Margaret St. , in Ironwood, with the Rev. Wesley
"Bo" Baumeister officiating.
Committal will take place in Sunset Acres Cemetery , Ironwood Township , where full military honors will be
accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.
Inurnment will follow.
Luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall immediately upon return
from the cemetery.
Chet's family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church .
