Charles J. "Charlie" VanLokeren,
91, of Ironwood, Mich., died peacefully Friday, March 8, 2013, in
Hurley. He was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Ironwood, son of
the late Emil and Julia (Vandenberghe) VanLokeren, attended St. Ambrose schools,
and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1940. While in high school,
he won a trip to the Chicago 4-H conference for having the highest yield of
potatoes in the U.P. Following graduation, he worked at the Brookvale Dairy in
Ironwood for nine years. Charlie was married to the former Melba V.
Koski on July 16, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood by the late Rev.
Jacob Hirvi. He joined the Ironwood Police Department in 1952, retiring with the
rank of captain after 30 years of service in 1982. Charlie was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Ironwood, where he served as church elder and chairman of the
trustees. He also was a member of the Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency
board of directors and the 55 Plus Club at MFC First National Bank in Ironwood,
having enjoyed many trips with the group. In earlier years, Charlie was active
in coaching Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball, and was a starter for
the Ironwood High School Ski Team at their meets. Melba and Charlie enjoyed
having lunch at the Hurley Senior Center, and especially enjoyed visiting their
children and grandchildren. Surviving are his wife Melba, of 63 years; six
children, Marcia (Lawrence) Erickson, Becker, Minn., David VanLokeren, Boulder,
Colo., Linda (John) Toijala, Baraga,Mich., Jim (Cathy) VanLokeren, Andover,
Minn., Bruce (Kathi) VanLokeren, Tucson, Az., and Lori (Larry) Marta, Negaunee,
Mich.; eight grandchildren, Jamie (Daniel) Putzier, Rochester, Minn.,
Christopher (Nicole) Erickson, Big Lake, Minn., Matthew Erickson, Wisconsin
Rapids, Courtney (Robert) Wilkerson, Coon Rapids, Minn., Taylor VanLokeren,
Andover, Katie VanLokeren, Plano, Texas, and Eric and Benjamin Marta, both of
Negaunee; four great-grandchildren, Carter and Chase Erickson and Meagan and
Chelsea Putzier; sisters-in-law, Mae (Charles) Markstrom, Cedarville, Mich.,
Phyllis Koski, Shakopee, Minn., and Judith Durkee, Victoria, Minn.; and numerous
nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, March
11, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church,
5104 E. Margaret St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Wesley "Bo" Baumeister
officiating. Committal will take place at the church, with
luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall. Spring interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Ironwood. Serving as pallbearers will be Christopher and
Matthew Erickson, Taylor VanLokeren, Eric and Benjamin Marta, and Robert
Wilkerson. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to
