Charles H. "Charlie" Oliver,
84, of Ironwood, died Thursday Dec. 20, 2012, at the Episcopal Care Center in
St. Paul. He was born Aug. 22, 1928, in Bessemer, Ala.,
son of the late Erwin and Ellen (Leinonen) Oliver, and came to Ironwood at
the age of five, where he attended local schools and Luther L. Wright High
School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Dec. 17, 1945,
serving his country stateside at the end of World War II, and was honorably
discharged on June 16, 1947. Returning to Ironwood, he was employed as a
delivery driver for Peerless Laundry, and was a partner in a gas station with
his brother-in-law, E. Dempsey Colasacco. He then worked at White Pine Copper
Co., retiring as an electrical technician in 1981. Charlie was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Ironwood and Ironwood American Legion Post 5, and a li fe member
of Ironwood Masonic Lodge No. 389. He loved to travel, and enjoyed spending time
with his children and grandchildren. On Sept. 1, 1951, he was married to the former
Lorraine M. Anderson at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood. She preceded him in
death on April 1, 2012. Surviving are a daughter, Diane McCarty, St.
Paul; three sons, Greg (Susan), Raleigh, N.C., James (Nancy), Wasilla, Alaska,
and Dennis, Addison, Mich.; four grandchildren, Angela Oliver, Minneapolis, Ross
Oliver, Raleigh, Jessica Oliver, Asheville, N.C., and Julie Oliver, Wasilla; one
great-grandchild, Andre Oliver; a sister, Bette Colasacco, Ironwood;
sister-in-law, Marian Budnick, Kenosha, Wis.; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Charlie was
preceded in death by a brother, Gerald "Jerry O"; sister, Marilyn Michelli; and
brothers-in-law, E. Dempsey Colasacco, Bernie Michelli and Walter
Budnick. Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec.
29, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick
Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Wes "Bo" Baumeister
officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the
Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at the Iron Nugget in
