Obituary

Charles L. "Charlie" Matazel, 88, of 515 E. Vaughn St., Ironwood, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009 in Wakefield. He was born June 20, 1920, in Ironwood, son of the late Leopold and Cecelia (Turzak) Matazel. Charlie graduated from L.L. Wright High School in 1938. He then served in the U.S. Navy for three years during WWII on the USS Farragut. Following his honorable discharge, Charlie worked at Kaiser Shipyards, Corp., in Richmond, Calif. He then worked in both Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. After retirement, he divided his time between Phoeniz, Ariz in the winter and Ironwood, moving here full time in 2006. Charlie rode his bike for two miles every day until he got sick. Surviving are his sister Cecelia Sullivan, Dearborn, Mich., and eleven nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death are his parents and his brothers August, Ernest and Rexford and sisters Julia Collins, Wilma Murphy and Janet Dickson. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be Sat. June 20, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
