Charles L. "Sonny" Keulen, Jr., 66, of 505 Bernard St., Hurley, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, in his daughter's home in Winthrop Harbor, ILL. He was born Nov. 30, 1940, in Libertyville, ILL., son of the late Charles and Elaine (Kalliomaa) Keulen, Sr., attended Libertyville schools, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1959. Sonny bartended at various local establishments in Hurley, including the American Legion Lanes and the Liberty Bell Chalet, and was the maintenence manager for the Gurnee, Ill. school district for many years, retiring in 2005 and returning to the family home in Hurley. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was married to the former Mary Hargett of Winthrop Harbor for 19 years. Surviving are a son, Shawn (Carol), and daughter, Kim Keulen (Phil Pavek), both of Winthrop Harbor; four grandchildren, Anthony, Breanna, Jordan and Blake; a sister, Marge (Ray) Bokan, Lake Villa, ILL; and cousins, Leroy Huff, Oma, and Gary, Mike and Laurie Huff, all of Hurley. Besides his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by a brother, Richard, in 1993. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m., at the Engstrom Funeral Home in Hurley, with the Rev. Christian Muellerleile officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in the Hurley Cemetery. Friends may call at the Engstrom Funeral Home in Hurley from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and again from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Anthony, Blake, and Jordan Keulen, Ray Bokan, Scott Brumm, Frank Grieder, and Gary and Mike Huff.
