Charles J. "Charlie"
Gustafson, 88, of Ironwood, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Aspirus Grand View
Hospital in Ironwood, with his loving family by his side. He was born April 8, 1924, in Ironwood, son of
the late Charles and Nanny (Larson) Gustafson, attended A.L. Norrie Grade
School, and graduated fron Luther L. Wright High School in 1942. He entered the
U.S. Navy on Jan. 13, 1943, proudly serving his country on submarine duty as a
machinist aboard the USS Triton in the South Pacific during World War II, and
was honorably discharged on Jan. 13, 1946. Following his discharge, Charlie worked as a
machinist in Detroit for a short time, returning to Ironwood and working in the
Newport Mine and at White Pine Copper Co. He then was employed at Superior-American Homes and
in maintenance at Big Powderhorn Mountain, retiring in 1998. Charlie was a member of Ironwood American
Legion Post 5. In his earlier years, he bowled in Range area leagues and enjoyed
deer hunting and fishing on inland lakes and the Big Carp River. He was also an
avid Detroit Tigers and Green Bay Packers fan. He was married to the former Lena M. "Lee"
Chairavalli on Aug. 16, 1948, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood, by the
late Msgr J.B. Moriarity. Lena preceded him in death on May 28,
2008. Surviving are a son, Charles (Valerie),
Prudenville; daughter, Christine Kavinsky (Steven Kaderlik), Ironwood; five
grandchildren, Kevin and Jennifer Gustafson, Rosina Switras, and Zachary and
Jacob Kavinsky; four great-grandchildren, Liliah, Kiera, Dylan and
Jordan; sister, Marilyn Cerasoli, Ironwood; numerous nieces and nephews; and
sisters-in-law, Florence Gustafson, Wisconsin, and Luce Chairavalli, Burbank,
Calif. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded
in death by brothers, Robert and Russell "Dinty"; and sisters, Adeline LaBlanc
and Eva Gustafson. Per Charlie's wishes, cremation has taken
place. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Oct.
30, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick
Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Dr. Ardyth
Kovacevich Johnson officiating. Committal will take place at the funeral home,
where full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post
5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at the Elk & Hound on
Country Club Road in Ironwood. Private interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Ironwood. Condolences may be given to Charlie's
