Charles E. Asunto, 90, of
Ironwood, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, in Ironwood. He was born May 3, 1919, in Ironwood, son of
the late Carl and Hilma (Taipale) Asunto, and attended the Hinkle School in
Kimball, Wis. He then worked on the family farm in Kimball until moving to
Ironwood Township, where he resumed farm work. He also worked in Civilian
Conservation Corps camps for a short time. Charles entered the U.S. Army on April 14,
1942, proudly serving in the Air Corps on five continents during World War II as
a B-17 mechanic and crew chief. Following his honorable discharge as a
sergeant on Dec. 6, 1945, he returned to the family farm in Ironwood Township
and worked in area mines for many years until the mines closed. He was then
employed as a welder in Escanaba for a short time, and retired from Quality
Rubber in Wakefield in 1981. Charles was a retired member of the United
Steelworkers of America. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working crossword puzzles,
and tinkering as a handyman. He was married to the former Martha Niemi on
Sept. 25, 1945. She preceded him in death on March 9, 1991. Surviving are four sons, Rodney "Louie"
(Jeanne), Franksville, Wis., Thomas (Yvonne Anderson), Ironwood, John (Jean
Bock), Hurley, and Tony, Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Audrey Gayan, Ashland,
Wis., and Shirley (Eugene) DaRonco, Pewaukee, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bruno (Erlene), Milwaukee, and Leo, Hartford,
Wis.; a sister, Elsie LaClaw, Milwaukee; a brother-in-law, Wilbert Niemi,
Ironwood; three sisters-in-law, Tyyne Salonen, Bessemer Township, Julianna
Abramson, Ironwood Township, and Vera Jansson, Swartz Creek; and numerous nieces
and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded
in death by a daughter-in-law, Debbie Asunto, on June 9, 2005; a
great-granddaughter at birth; and numerous brothers and sisters. In accordance with Charles's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan.
5, 2010, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in
Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Committal will take place at the funeral home,
where full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post
5 Honor Guard. Spring inurnment will be in Sunset Acres
Cemetery, Ironwood Township. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10
to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
