Obituary

Catherin "Kay" Ardyth Denis Kovacevich Masenheimer, 89, formerly of Ironwood, Mich. and Hendersonville, N.C. , died Thursday, April 5, 2012, in Hurley.      Kay was born June 14, 1922, in Wild Rice, N.D. to Alphonse Denis and Clara (Trehus) Pahuski, and was foster daughter to Mr. & Mrs. A.I. Anderson of Hickson, N.D. from 1927 to 1936. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1939, attended Hairdresser Academy in Fargo, N.D. in June 1940, and completed the Dale Carnegie course in Dec. 1959.      On Dec. 4, 1943, she married Robert Kovacevich in San Francisco. She started the French Beauty Shop Hair Styling Salon on July 2, 1947 on Aurora St. in downtown Ironwood. Bob joined the salon in June 1949. They built a building at 218 So. Suffolk St. in Ironwood and operated the business until Sept. 1969, then moved to Cape Coral, Fla. Bob preceded Kay in death on Feb. 21, 1974 in St. Petersburg, Fla.      Kay married  Larry W. Masenheimer on May 21, 1977, at Christ Lutheran Church in Cape Coral. They moved from Florida to Hendersonville in 1997. Larry preceded her in death on April 22, 2011.      Kay was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville, and Faith Community Church in Franklin, Wis., where her daughter, Rev. Dr. Ardyth Kovacevich Johnson, was founding pastor. She served as president of the Upper Peninsula Cosmetologist Association from 1962-1964, belonged to the Ironwood Business and Professional Women's Club, and was a former active member of the Gogebic Country Club, where she was Business Women's Club champion in 1969-1970 and runner-up in the Afternoon League in 1973. She also was women's champion at Cape Coral Golf Club in 1973. An avid bowler in her younger years, Kay was a member of the French Beauty Shop team that captured first place in 1953 at the U.P. bowling tournament in Marquette, Mich. She was also president of Shuffle Board Southwest Coast District from 1994-1996 in Florida that had 6,000 members. Ill health prevented Kay from participating in all sports.      Surviving are her daughter, the Rev. Dr. Ardyth Kovacevich Johnson (C.Dale), Hurley; two grandchildren, Yvonne A.K. Johnson, Spokane, Wash., and Randall C. Johnson, Kona, Hawaii; nieces and nephews; stepson, Randy Masenheimer; stepdaughters, Diane Portzline and Deborah Hansford; and stepgrandchildren, Alex, Bradley, Curtis, Amber, Zeth and Jake.            Kay was predeceased by her son, Rod Steve Kovacevich, on Sept. 8, 2010; and brother, Leverne Denis, in 1966.      Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5, at 3 p.m., preceded by visitation at 2:30 p.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Dr. Ardyth Kovacevich Johnson and nephew, the Rev. Robert Shutes officiating.      Committal services and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.      A reception will be held at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood at 5:30 p.m.      Pallbearers will be C.
