Obituary

Dr. Carl J. Rainaldo, 81, of 505 2nd Ave. North, Hurley, retired Hurley dentist, died unexpectedly Friday, June 6, 2008, in Ironwood, following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 15, 1926, in Hurley, son of the late Anton and Ann (Taglienti) Rainaldo, attended St. Mary's Grade School, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944. He then served stateside in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a corpsman in a dental unit. Following his honorable discharge, Carl attended Gogebic Community College for two years, furthered his education at the Unversity of Wisconsin-Madison, and graduated from Marquette University Dental School in Milwaukee. He practiced dentistry in Mercer for three years and in Hurley for over 30 years, retiring in 1998. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, Hurley American Legion Post 58, the Hurley Lions Club, the Gogebic Community College Foundation and the former Ironwood Elks Lodge. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing on the Gile Flowage and also enjoyed deer hunting. Carl was married to the former Adele R. Romstad on June 5, 1954 in the student chapel at St. Norbert's College in DePere. She preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 2005. Surviving are a daughter, Carla Pogliano, of Mercer; two grandchildren, Christopher Pogliano, St. Paul, Minn., and Elena Pogliano, Duluth, Minn.; a sister, Adelaide Rainaldo, Hurley; an aunt, Helen Rudberg, Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous cousins. Besides his parents and wife, Carl was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Rainaldo, at the age of 2 1/2. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley, where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by members of Hurley American Legion Post 58. Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery. Friends may call at the Engstrom Funeral Home in Hurley from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, where the parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be members of the Hurley Lions Club to include Bob Schonberg, Bob Traczyk, Dave Traczyk, Donn Rowe, Bruce Dianich and Gary Pelkola.
