Obituary

Carl W. Prosek, 91, a lifelong Kimball, Wis. resident, was called to his eternal reward Thursday, March 27, 2008, in Hurley. He was born Aug. 28, 1916 in Kimball, the sixth of seven children, to the late George and Mary (Gutekunst) Prosek Sr. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hurley, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1934. On July 24, 1940, he married Audrey Ida Jarvela at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hurley. Between 1941 and 1948, they would have six children together. Audrey preceded him in death in 1976. During his lifetime, Carl was a "jack of all trades", owning and operating a hardware store in Hurley in the late 1930's, working as a miner in the Montreal Mine during World War II, for the Electrolux Corp. in vacuum sales and repair, as a farmer and politician, and as a night dockman and manager at Clairmont Transfer in Ironwood, retiring in 1977. Carl held public office as Town of Kimball chairman, seats on the Hurley school board, and other various seats in Iron County government. He was active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and helping in the upkeep of the church. He also worked with the Iron County 4H and the Iron County Fair board, and was a former active member of the Hurley Lions Club, Kiwanis International, and other community clubs. Holding education in high esteem, Carl donated and sold much of his farmland to the Hurley School District for the new K-12 School in 1990. In 2002, he was given the Hurley Education Foundation Award for being a friend and supporter of the Hurley schools. He is survived by his six children, Charlene (Carl "Bill") Newhouse, Kimball, Carl (Gay), Grand Rapids, Minn., Art (Carol), Neenah, Janice (Richard) Maxfield, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, Gene (Diane LoDico), Cascade, Wis., and Raymond (Ann), Snellville, GA; 15 grandchildren, Eric (Carolyn) Newhouse, Tacoma, Wash., Shawn (Tracey) Newhouse, Eau Claire, Wis., Jake Newhouse (Sadie Leppi), Farmington, N.M., Cindy Prosek, Minneapolis, Denise (Milt) Ferris, Crystal, Minn., Steve (Heather) Prosek, Appleton, Wis., Joe (Taura) Prosek, Muscatine, Iowa, Andy (Brett) Prosek, Appleton, Chuck Prosek (Jamie Busse), Neenah, Jon Maxfield and Mike Maxfield (Jamie Plauntz), both of Toronto, Canada, Jennifer (Jon) Haupt, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and Fred (Jennifer) Prosek, Michael Prosek and Josh Prosek, all of Snellville; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter (Edith), Zellwood, Fla.; a sister, Elsie Stetzer, Eau Claire; numerous nieces and nephews; and his very dear and special friends at the Bonshell Cafe in Hurley. Besides his parents and wife, Carl was preceded in death by three brothers, George Jr., Art and Leonard; and a sister, Ann Meyer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Burgess Huehn officiating. Committal will take place at the church, with luncheon to follow at the Kimball Community Center. Spring burial will be in the Hurley Cemetery. Friends may call at the Engstrom Funeral Home, 210 Maple St., in Hurley, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and at the church from 10 a.m. until service time on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Milt Ferris, Shawn, Jake and Eric Newhouse, Steve, Joe, Andy and Chuck Prosek, and Jon and Mike Maxfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grand View Hospital, N-10561 Grandview Lane, Ironwood, Mich. 49938, or to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 309 2nd Ave. No., Hurley, Wis. 54534.
