Obituary

Carl A. Erickson, 84, of 519 So. Spruce St., Ironwood, Mich., died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in Hurley.      He was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Bessemer Township, Mich., son of the late August and Edna (Nyman) Erickson, attended Ramsay and Bessemer schools, and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer in 1943. He then operated heavy equipment for various logging companies in the area and worked in the Peterson Mine.      Carl entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 4, 1949, spending one year in the Army Corps of Engineers in occupation forces in Okinawa, Japan, then served in Korea from Oct. 1950 to Dec. 1951 in the 376th Combat Engineer Utility Detachment, receiving the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), two Bronze Service Stars and the Korean Service Ribbon.      Following his discharge as a staff sergeant, he returned to the area and resumed working in the Peterson Mine until it closed. He then worked for the U.S. Forest Service Job Corps at Camp Ojibway as a work supervisor for three years, in management at Ironwood Products for nine years, and as a heavy equipment operator for Ahonen Lumber Co. for two years, retiring as assistant airport manager at the Gogebic County Airport in 1991.      Carl was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and a former member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He also belonged to A.A.R.P. and was a past member of the Iron Birds Flying Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and polka dancing.      On Aug. 16, 1952, he was married to the former Florence T. Revers at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. Ambrose Matejik. Florence survives.      Also surviving are three sons, Allan (Cathy), Woodbridge, Va., Brian (Virginia), Hudson, and Dennis, Park Falls; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael, Steven, Victoria and Andrew Erickson; a brother, Norris (Judy), Port Washington; brother-in-law, Donald (Mary) Revers, Melbourne, Fla.; sister-in-law, Kay Erickson, Milwaukee; and numerous nieces and nephews.      Besides his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a brother, Donald; and sister, Elizabeth Kobernick.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 25, at noon, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl Pepin, celebrant.       Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.      Cremation will follow.      Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.      Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately following military rites.      Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 11 a.m. until noon on Wednesday.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program or the American Cancer Society.      To view Carl's obituary online, sign the guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
