Betty B. Hedstrom, 95, a
former longtime resident of Ironwood, Mich., died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at the
Minnesota Masonic Home-North Ridge Care Center in New Hope. The former Betty Blair Luther was born March
29, 1917, in Eagle River, Wis., daughter of the late Cyrus and Agnes (Gander)
Luther. The family later moved to Bessemer, Mich. where Betty attended
Washington School. She later attended Central Grade School and Luther L. Wright
High School in Ironwood. On May 23, 1938, she married Arnold J.
Hedstrom in Bessemer. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1980. Betty worked as a sales clerk at Woolworth's
in downtown Ironwood, and at Setterlund's Cleaners and Santini's Gift Shop. She
also worked part-time as a popular greeter at K-Mart for nine
years. She was an active member of the Bethany
Covenant Church where she belonged to the Dorcas Society and sang in the choir.
She later joined the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood where she was a
member of United Methodist Women and the Sarah Circle. Betty enjoyed the company
of people, especially family and her many friends. In her earlier years,
she enjoyed her hobbies of knitting, crochet and needlepoint. In later years,
her interests included reading, playing cards, and working word
puzzles. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Semler, and
son, Bruce (Diane), both of Coon Rapids; three grandchildren, Kirsten Semler and
Lisa (David) Hoaglund, Coon Rapids, and Boyd Hedstrom, New Brighton; twin
great-granddaughters, Zoe and Ilsa Hoaglund; brother, Donald (Dot) Luther, Fort
Walton Beach, Fla.; sister, Joyce (Dewey) Bjork, Baxter; sister-in-law, Mildred
Luther, Milford, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Charles and Clifford Luther. Out of respect for Betty's wishes, cremation
has taken place. Memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 3,
2012, at 2 p.m., preceded by visitation at 1 p.m., at Wesley United Methodist
Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Rosemary DeHut officiating. Committal will take place at the church, with
coffee and cake to follow in the fellowship hall. Private interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Ironwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
Wesley United Methodist Church, 500 E. McLeod Ave., Ironwood, MI
