Bertha M. Probelski, 89, of 421 So. Suffolk St., Ironwood, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, in Ironwood. The former Bertha Maki was born July 23, 1918, in Bessemer, and attended the Harding School. She was employed as a maid in Bessemer for a short time, and as a cook at the Hunter's Inn in Bessemer for several years. Bertha was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint and cooking. On May 6, 1939, she was married to Lawrence C. Probelski at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer, by the Rev. Gondek. Lawrence preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 1999. Surviving are a son, James (Lady), Livonia; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, June Lorenzo, Carey, Ill.; sisters-and-brothers-in-law, Kathryn Probelske, Ironwood, Frances and David Rampanelli, and Margaret and Edgar Bielecki, all of Bessemer, Mary Hornick, Wausau, Wis., and Jerry Burke, Lake Zurich, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Bertha was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Ann Ahonen, in 1974; son-in-law, Robert Ahonen, in 1988; a brother, Melvin Maki; and two sisters, Ruth Priante and Gladys Burke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will be held in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish hall. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer. Friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday.
