Obituary

Arlene D. Palojarvi, 76, of Beagle Club Rd., Ironwood Township, former Ironwood Township clerk, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, with her loving family by her side, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, following a lengthy battle with kidney disease.      The former Arlene D. Suliin was born Aug. 14, 1935, in Erwin Township, Ironwood, daughter of the late Walter and Hulda (Mackey) Suliin, attended K.P. Silberg Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1952.      She was employed as a secretary at A. Lieberthal Insurance Agency in downtown Ironwood, as audit manager at Sears-Roebuck & Co. for ten years, as a tax preparer for H&R Block in Ironwood, and as head cashier at K-Mart for four years, retiring as Ironwood Township clerk after 11 years of service in 1996. She also  worked in the Suliin Family Greenhouse in Erwin Township for many years.      Arlene was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ironwood Township and a former member of the Airport Home Extension Club. She enjoyed square dancing, knitting, crocheting, camping and fishing, and especially enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in 4-H and all other activities.      She was married to John G. Palojarvi on Jan. 17, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironwood, by the late Rev. Arnold Stadius. John survives.      Also surviving are two daughters, Vicki (Mike) Nelson and Donna Lipske, both of Ironwood Township; three grandchildren, Nikki Lipske, and Katie and Sarah Nelson; a brother, Reino Suliin, Ironwood; a sister, Ruth Nelson, Bergland, Mich.; numerous nieces and nephews; and brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Ruth Walden, Anna Marie (Mike) Thurston, David (Sondra) Palojarvi, and Natalie (John) Rhea.      Besides her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by a grandson, Luke Lipske, on May 14, 2006; sister, Shirley Mae Suliin at age six months; stepmother, Helen Suliin; sister-in-law, Darlene Suliin; and brothers-in-law, Adolph Nelson and Wendell Walden.      Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.      Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church on Airport Rd. in Ironwood Township, with the Rev. Bill Jacobson, officiating.      Committal will take place at the church, with luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall.      Private interment will be in Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township.      Condolences may be given to Arlene's family online at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
