Obituary

Anton A. "Tony" Stano, 84, of 906 E. Pine St., Ironwood, died Wednesday evening, June 17, 2009, in Ironwood. He was born June 13, 1925, in Ironwood, son of the late Gregor and Veronica (Stano) Stano, and attended St. Ambrose Grade and High School. He entered the U.S. Navy on April 6, 1943, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations in Hawaii during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a coxswain on Jan. 31, 1946. Following his discharge, he returned to the area where he was employed in the Plymouth Open Pit Mine in Wakefield, at Steiger Lumber Co. in Bessemer, and Allender Ford Motors, the Geneva Mine and Schult Mobile Homes, all in Ironwood, retiring from White Pine Copper Co. in 1989. Tony was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, Wis. and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood. He was a member and past treasurer of the Aurora Athletic Club in Ironwood, and served as past treasurer of the Slovak Catholic Sokol. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and making wood, and loved spending time with his family. He was married to the former Virginia F. Kovales on June 22, 1946, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wakefield. She preceded him in death on Sept. 10, 2001. Surviving are a son, Mark (Pamela), Neenah, Wis.; two daughters, Geri (Lennie) Zaleski, Hurley, and Ginny (Gary) Carlson, San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Leslie Stano, Irvine, Calif., Melanie Stano, Madison, Wis., Anthony "A.J." (Jackie) Carlson, White Bear Lake, Minn., Stephen (Lindsey) Carlson, Rochester, Minn., Marc (Larissa) Stano, Decorah, Iowa, Adam and Toby Hurtubies, both of Springfield, Ill., and Jericho "Coco" Stano, Neenah; five great-grandchildren, Alex and Jake Carlson, Michael and Christian Stano, and Samantha "Sammy" Prast; two sisters, Chris Pribyl and Aggie Armata, both of Ironwood; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Albert "Buzzy" (Jean) Burzinski and Betty Stano, both of Ironwood; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, especially life-long pal and fishing partner, John (Cookie) Kolodziejczyk, Ironwood. Besides his parents and wife, Tony was preceded in death by a son, John, on May 25, 2001; brothers, Joseph in infancy, John and Gregory; and sisters, Polly Harris and Margie Burzinski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 23, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Mark and Marc Stano, Gary, A.J. and Stephen Carlson, Michael Armata and Lennie Zaleski.
