Obituary

Anton B. "Tony" Cossi, 94, of 167 E. Harding Ave., Ironwood, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in his home.      He was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Bessemer, son of the late Alexander and Amelia (Deforno) Cossi, attended the Barber Grade School there, and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1933. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Pori near Mass City, Mich. from 1935 to 1937, then began employment with the State of Michigan Employment Security Commission. He entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 28, 1943, serving during World War II with the 10th Mountain Division ski troops and the Signal Corps.         Following his honorable discharge as a sergeant on May 7, 1946, Tony returned to the area and continued employment with the State of Michigan Employment Security Commission, retiring after 42 years of service as manager of the downtown Ironwood office in 1980.      Tony enjoyed sports as a young man including skiing, hockey and baseball. While working for the State of Michigan in the Lower Peninsula in the late 1930's he played semi-pro baseball for the Port Huron Cardinals. An avid golfer, he was a charter member of Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley, Wis. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.      Tony married the former Gena M. Federico in 1947 in Ironwood. She preceded him in death on Feb. 26, 2006.      Surviving are two sons, Dennis (Peg), Ironwood Township, and David (Patricia McGovern), Golden Valley, Minn.; a daughter, Mary Rose (Donald Venne) Cossi, Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, Alex (Heidi) Cossi, Milwaukee, Melina Cossi, Chicago, Tony Cossi, San Diego, Calif., Natalie LeVander, Minneapolis, Domenic (Addie Jadin) Cossi, Missoula, Mont., Criste (Robert Jones) Cossi, Minneapolis, and Colin Cossi, Golden Valley; and three nephews, Mickey Cossi, Dallas, Tex., Jerry Cossi, Bessemer, and Jack Pearson, Milwaukee.      Besides his parents and wife, Tony was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar.      Private family services will be held.      Spring burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley.      To view Tony's obituary online, sign the guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are with McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home Inc., Ironwood.
