Antoinette A. "Toni" Calvetti,
86, of 204 Iron St., Hurley, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in Hurley, with her
daughter and son-in-law by her side. She was born July 6, 1923, in Wakefield,
Mich., daughter of the late Battista and Mary Barbara (Berga) Massucco, and
granddaughter of the late Pietro and Angela Berga. She attended Washington School in Bessemer,
Mich. and Southside School in Hurley, graduating from Lincoln High School in
Hurley in 1941. She attended the University of California-Berkley and graduated
cum laude from Northland College in Ashland with a degree in teaching in 1966.
Her post-graduate education was completed at the University of
Wisconsin-Superior. After graduating in 1966, Toni began her 25
year teaching career with the Hurley School District as a first grade teacher,
during which time she received several State awards for the teaching
of reading. She was inducted into Who's Who Among American Educators where she
was joined years later by her daughter, Jean, and granddaughter, Pam, which was
"The icing on my cake!" she often commented. Another highlight of her teaching
career was the opportunity to be her grandchildren's first grade
teacher. Toni was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Hurley, it's Council of Catholic Women and the St. Mary's Choir, the
Hurley Women's Club, Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Society for Women Educators,
Hurley Lioness, Hurley Senior Citizens, a member and past president of
the Hurley Library Board, and was a Girl Scout (Brownie) leader. She partook in
the ground-breaking ceremony of the Hurley City Hall and still was kidded about
being the "only woman included and holding a shovel!" She was
also instrumental in the design of the Hurley Public Library. She enjoyed art
work and making floral wreaths. On May 1, 1944, she married the love of her
life, Eugene Calvetti, in Chicago. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2009,
with his daughter and son-in-law at his side. Surviving are a son, Battista "Sonny" (Amy)
Calvetti, Sun Prairie; a daughter, Jean Barbara (Paul) Flateau, Montreal; two
grandchildren who were the "joy of our lives", Jesse Paul (Patricia) Flateau,
Dallas, Tx., and Pamela Jean (Doug) Ihlenfeldt, Stoughton; a
great-granddaughter, Aylssa Lyn Flateau of Texas; brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Richard and Kathleen (June) Calvetti, Hurley, and David and
Irene (Calvetti) Rautio, Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and
nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Thursday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the
Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal and entombment will follow
