Andrew George Merrill, 77, of White Pine, Michigan, passed away on April 14, 2026, at his home. Andy was born on November 30, 1948, in Dagget, Michigan, to Lucille and Lafayette Merrill on their family’s farm.
He was the oldest of seven children. In 1954, his family moved to White Pine, Michigan. After graduation, Andy served 6 years in the Navy as a nuclear engineer on the Tecumseh submarine on strategic deterrent patrols during the Vietnam War. After attending the University of Michigan, his career took him to Clinton, Iowa, with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and later to the Santa Fe Railroad in Galesburg, Illinois, as a railroad signalman. Andy served as secretary of the American Legion Post 285 in Galesburg. After retirement, he returned to White Pine to care for his father. Andy was an official Son of the American Revolution. Active with ancestry, Andy worked as a census taker for the United States Census Bureau. He also volunteered to transcribe historical handwritten records.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille, father Lafayette Merrill, and his sister Ruth Pastori Merrill of Eagle River, Wisconsin, and his niece Julia Jakal. Survivors include his sister Helen Catron of Saint Peters, Missouri, Arlene Merrill Jakal (Heinz) of Mundelein, Illinois, Jean Merrill Bradour (James) of Clinton, Iowa, Elaine Merrill, Velaitham (Ravi) of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Edward Merrill of White Pine, Michigan. His many nieces and nephews include Angela Spegel, Peter Jakal, Stacy Rickerl, Jenny Sanders, Brian Bradour, Abby Stinger, and Emmet Catron.
A Celebration of life is planned for June 6, 2026, in Carney, Michigan, and he will be buried at the Nadeau Township Cemetery in Menominee, Michigan.
