Adeline D. Pohjola, 83, of Appleton, and formerly of Ironwood, Mich., passed away peacefully on Aug. 10, 2009, in Appleton, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was born Nov. 9, 1925, in Ironwood to the late Antonio Stella and Dorinda (Colasacco) Stella Justinak. She grew up in Ironwood where she was known to be an excellent ice skater. Her role model was Sonja Henie. When she was 17, Adeline moved with her family to Tacoma, Wash. where she graduated from high school in 1944. During World War II, Adeline worked at the Boeing plant making her contribution to the war along with many other "Rosie the Riveters". After the war, she returned to Ironwood where she met and married Raymond V. Pohjola, her loving husband of 52 years, on March 12, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1998. Adeline raised her family in Detroit and Ironwood where Ray owned a barber shop. In 1973, she moved to Menominee, Mich. where Ray purchased another barber shop.Then in 1975, Adeline moved to Marinette, Wis. where she worked as a cook for the Luther Home until she retired in 1990. After her retirement, Adeline returned to her home town of Ironwood-her favorite place on earth. In 2004, she moved to Appleton to be closer to her son. Family and friends were always the most important thing for Adeline. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and a good friend to many. She will be sadly missed by all of those whose lives she touched. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon (Bernie) Wood, Mosinee, and a son, Dale (Terrie), Appleton; seven grandchildren, Tina (Brian) Bronk, Stevens Point, Stacy Slocum and Bryan Kaseno, both of Wausau, David Kaseno, Mosinee, Marti Lynn Cirilli and her fiance, Eric Cerney, Fond du Lac, Erik (Karen) Pohjola, Schofield, and Carl Pohjola, Appleton; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; a sister, Maryann (Ken) Kilponen, Westfield, N.J.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Hood, and a brother, Cyril Justinak. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery. Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 10 to 11a.m. on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Bernie Wood, Erik and Carl Pohjola, Bryan and David Kaseno, and Brian Bronk. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
