Obituary for Thomas Maki

Thomas I. Maki, age 73 of E. Gold St., Bessemer, passed away peacefully at home, Friday, April 21, 2017 with his family by his side. He was born August 28, 1943 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Viljo and Irene (Koski) Maki. Tom attended the Bedford High School in Bedford, Ohio, graduating with the Class of 1961. He attended Gogebic Community College and UW-Superior where he received a Bachelor''s Degree in Political Science. Tom also attended Northern Michigan University where he received his Masters Degree. Tom was employed at White Pine Copper Mine and as an Insurance Salesman. He was also employed by the State of Michigan Dept. of Social Services where he was a Supervisor and Coordinator of Intake workers and volunteers. He was a member of Santa''s Helpers and The Children''s Trust Fund. Tom also delivered Meals-on-Wheels and worked for Powderhorn Lodging. He was a Little League Coach and a Hockey fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his sons while they were playing hockey. He was an avid reader and a member of Theatre North. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and Sudoku. Tom was married to the former Bonnie Hulstrom on August 29, 1964 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood by Rev. Porteous. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Todd Maki and Jay Maki of Bessemer; his daughter, Jenny (Ashish Thaker) Maki of Bellingham, Mass.; a granddaughter, Kathrine of Nashua, NH; and many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David. Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home, 304 S. Sophie St., Bessemer with Rev. Kurt Kovanan officiating. Tom''s family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. Memorial Contributions to Regional Hospice are preferred as Tom was under their care for 2 1/2 years.
