Obituary for Sharon Jean "nee Fabbri" Ahonen

Sharon Jean Ahonen (nee Fabbri), 60, an Ironwood, Mich. native
and former long time resident, passed away on December 17, 2010 in St. Louis,
Mo.   after a brave battle with lung
cancer.   Her husband of 41 years, Curtis
“Curt” Ahonen, was by her side.
            She was born in Ironwood on Jan. 5,
1950 to Jean and Evelyn (Pucilowski) Fabbri.  
She attended Ironwood area schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright
High School in 1968 and attended Gogebic Community College.   Sharon married Curt at St. Ambrose Catholic
Church in Ironwood on Feb. 7, 1970.
            Sharon raised her two kids with her
husband in Ironwood.   She held various
jobs in the area but is best remembered for her years at Mattson’s TV and
Appliance as well as for being the proprietor of the Ironwood bowling alley for
some time.   After the closure of the
White Pine Mine in 1995, Sharon moved with Curt as he followed his mine safety
career.   She lived in Arizona, Missouri,
Colorado, Utah, Arkansas, and finally again in Missouri.   Sharon loved to travel and meet new people
throughout the U. S. as well as stay in touch with her tight knit group of
friends from the Ironwood-Hurley area.  
Happy to experience the country with her husband, she always considered
returning to Ironwood as her home.             Sharon was preceded in death by her
father, Jean, and infant brother, John Peter.             Surviving are her mother, Evelyn
Fabbri, Ironwood; husband, Curt, West Plains, Mo.; son, Cory Ahonen with
daughter-in-law Carrie and granddaughter Alyssa, Bowie, Md; and daughter Joy-el
Dennis with granddaughters Jourdyn and Emily, Lees Summit, Mo.   She is also survived by her siblings; Mick
Fabbri with wife Debbie, Bessemer, Mich., Sue Strand with husband Mike, Hurley,
Wis., Diane Friedman, Ironwood, Eugene Fabbri with his wife Colleen, Bessemer,
Beth Rigoni with husband Jerry, Hurley, and Tricia Peterson, Watersmeet, Mich.;
as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and
cousins.             The family would like to thank the
staff at Barnes Jewish Hospital and Hospice in St. Louis for the tender care
they provided Sharon and the wonderful support given to her
family.             Sharon believed in giving where
needed and in the end she donated her usable organs.   In lieu of flowers, her family requests to
those able to give to please make a donation in Sharon’s honor to the American
Cancer Society or another worthy cause.             Sharon was deeply loved and will be
greatly missed.             Cremation has taken
place.             A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 29, at noon, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in
Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant.             Rite of Committal will take place in
the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish
hall.             Spring inurnment will be in
Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.             Relatives and friends may call in
the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 11 a.m. until noon on
