Ruth G. Lavoy, 90, of Bessemer, went to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, December 28, 2022.

Ruth was born on January 10, 1932, in Bessemer to Julius I. and Lauretta C. (Semmerling) Grabowski. She was a 1949 graduate of A.D. Johnston High School, she attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree (cum laude) and Masters degree from Loyola University of Chicago. Ruth was first employed by St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago as a researcher. She then pursued an opportunity at Scripps Clinic in LaJolla, CA, before finally retiring in 1978 from Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago as an Administrator - Biochemist.

On June 5, 1976, Ruth was united in marriage with Orville A. Lavoy at St. Gertrude’s Church in Chicago. She was a faithful member of St. Sebastian’s Catholic Church in Bessemer.

Ruth is survived by her nieces and nephews; Mary (Rick) Ruffolo, Sue (Rich) Plath, Karen (Paul) Delaney, Joseph (Takako) Halteman, Robert Halteman, David (Erika) Halteman, Sharon Rose and Daniel Grabowski, Gayle (Joseph) Quinlan, Laurie (Marc) Provencal, and Michelle (Bob) Cassidy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville; brother, James (Lois) Grabowski; sisters, Rita (Farrell) Boley and Irene (Conrad) Halteman, and niece Marie Boley.

Visitation for Ruth will take place on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at the church at 11 a.m. with Father Dominic Agyapong officiating. Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in the spring of 2023.
