Obituary for Michael F. Maurin

Michael F. Maurin, 89, of 609
Pabst St., Ironwood, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, in Ironwood.      He was born April 15, 1921, in Ironwood, son
of the late Michael and Margaret (Hobena) Maurin, and graduated from Luther L.
Wright High School with the class of 1939. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in
Aug. 1942, serving three years during World War II in the European, African and
Middle Eastern Theater of Operations, and was honorably discharged as a corporal
in Nov. 1945. Following active duty, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force
Reserves for six years.      Michael married the former Erma Bonato on June
22, 1946, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood. He then worked for the
Pickands-Mather Mining Co. in the Newport and Geneva Mines for 21 years. When
the mines closed, he worked for Schult Mobile Homes in Ironwood for two years,
and at several other jobs in the following years. Mike then was employed in the
Bessemer School District as a bus driver and custodian for eight years, retiring
at age 65. After retiring, he drove the van for the American Legion for several
years.      Mike was a member of Our Lady of
Peace   Catholic Church in Ironwood, where he sang
in the men's choir for over 30 years and was an usher. He was also a member of
Ironwood American Legion Post 5 and a life member of Ironwood Knights of
Columbus Council No.1396 and the KSKJ Lodge. He worked for the K of C polka fest
and tootsie roll drive for many years.      Mike is survived by his wife, Erma; two
daughters, Virginia (Ronald) DeMario, Wausau, Wis., and Mary Kay (Michael)
Czerneski, Ironwood; three grandchildren, Tina (Greg) Spradlin, Port Orange,
Fla., Daniel DeMario, Wausau, and Nicole DeMario, St. Paul, Minn.; four
great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Katrina, Samantha and Joseph Spradlin; one
sister, Agnes (William) King, Tallahassee, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Juno
and Irene Bonato, both of Ironwood; and many nieces and nephews.      Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by his brothers, Joseph and John, and his sister, Victoria Pieper.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Friday, Feb. 11, at noon, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with
the Rev. Raymond Moncher, celebrant.      Rite of Committal will take place in the St.
Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military honors will be accorded by
the Ironwo o d American Legion Post 5
Honor Guard.      Luncheon will follow in the parish
hall.      Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood.      Visitation will be held in the St. Joseph
Family Room at the church from 11 a.m. until noon on Friday, where members of
Pere Menard Assembly No. 471, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, will serve as
honor guard.       Pallbearers will be John Kostac, Jim
