Obituary for Mary Ann Smith

Mary Ann Smith, 82, of Ironwood, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

Mary was born the daughter of Earl and Mary (Ferrari) Proctor Sr. on June 20, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. Mary was united in marriage with Gerald Smith Sr. on January 21, 1963. Mary in her younger years owned and operated My Place Café in Ewen, MI. She also worked as a CNA at Gogebic Medical Facility in Wakefield and at Josephson’s in Ironwood. She spent many years as a hostess at the Branding Iron in Hurley. After retiring she loved old movies, game shows a good chat on the phone crocheting afghans, and her cat Maddie. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, her sons, and her daughters-in-law. She enjoyed the Packers, Wolverines, and could discuss politics with anyone. She will be missed by all who knew her, especially her family.

She is survived by her sons; John (Kim) Smith of Fifield, WI, Gerald (Sue) Smith of Ironwood, Steve (Nicole) Smith of Hurley, and very special friend, Greg Zalewski of Ironwood, brother; George Proctor of Oklahoma, and her sister; Eldora Paczesny of Arizona, sisters-in-law; Denise Proctor, Karen Smith and Ann Sain, seven grandchildren and her feline friend Maddie aka “little peanut”. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald, and brother Ronald Proctor.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 1 p.m. to the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home in Ironwood with Pastor Mike Hill officiating. A luncheon will follow immediately at Bucko’s Saloon in Hurley. Inurnment will take place in spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hurley.
