Obituary for Marilyn J. Butson

Marilyn J. Butson, 90, of Ironwood Township passed away on October 27, 2021, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital.

She was born September 14, 1931, the daughter of George and Esther (Mattson) Aspinwall. She grew up in Bessemer later moved to Ironwood where she attended school. She graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1949. After her children went to school, she pursued a career in teaching. She attended Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Northland College in Ashland, and Northern Michigan University where she obtained a master’s degree in 1969. She taught at Ironwood area schools including Roosevelt Grade School for 30 years, retiring in 1992. She was a beloved second-grade teacher.

Marilyn married George Butson on October 14, 1950, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood. He preceded her in death on September 14, 2012.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ironwood, Gogebic Country Club Women’s League, Lake Fairway County Club in North Ft. Myers, Florida, and the Michigan Education Association. She loved to golf and knit, and travel to Florida during the winter months

Marilyn is survived by her son, George (Donna) Butson of New City, New York; daughters, Tracey (Kenneth) Talaska of Ironwood Township, Michigan and Candice (Jay) Baksic of Grosse IIe, Michigan; grandchildren, Emily (Dan) Hunt, Thomas (Anna) Talaska, Bhaird (Jennie) Baksic, Benjamin (Kathleen) Baksic, Cody (Jason) Carter, Kristen (Stephen) Coyle, Carolyn (David) Bell, and Lauren Butson; great-grandchildren, Alex Hunt, Katie Talaska, Jonathan Talaska, Gavin Baksic, Alyson Baksic, Wyatt Carter, Angelina Coyle, Lilyana Coyle, Everly Coyle, Brandon Coyle, Jordan Bell, and Nate Cronon; brothers, Dennis (Rosie) Aspinwall of Bessemer, Michigan and Donald Aspinwall of Schofield, Wisconsin; and sister-in-law, Ruth Aspinwall of Ironwood, Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Aspinwall and Esther Aspinwall Johnson; husband, George; brothers, George and Howard Aspinwall; and sister-in-law, Jean Aspinwall.

A memorial service will be held at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home of Ironwood on Thursday, November 4th at 11 am preceded by a visitation from 10 am until the time of the service. A luncheon will follow the service.

The family would like to thank Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation, and Assisted Living Community for their compassionate care.
