Obituary for Lawrence Levra

Lawrence J. Levra, 82, of Hurley, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 in Ironwood. He was born January 28, 1934 in Iron Belt, Wis., son of the late John and Minnie(Rosetti) Levra. Lawrence attended Iron Belt schools, graduating from the Iron Belt High School with the class of 1952. From February 17, 1954 until February 16, 1956, he served in the U.S. Army where he received the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals. Locally Lawrence was employed in the Montreal Mine and the White Pine Copper Mine. He was also employed by the Iron County Highway Department for many years until retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially bird hunting with his Springer Spaniel dogs. He was a caretaker of the shooting range in Iron Belt. He enjoyed watching sports, baseball was his favorite. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He never missed a game. On September 26, 1953, Lawrence was united in marriage to Geraldine "Geri" O'Leary at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2009. He is survived by two sons, Gerald "Jerry" Levra of Kimball and Duane Levra of Montreal, six grandchildren, Daulton, Mitchell, Casey, Ashley, Carly and Dylan; andthree great grandchildren, Kodie, Brayden and Kallin. Besides his parents and wife, Lawrence was preceded in death by a son Curtis "Curt" on January 24, 2009, and his sisters Eleanor and Lorraine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 12 noonat St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley.Father Frank Kordek OFM will be the celebrant. Lawrence's family will receive relatives and friendsone hour prior to themass at the church on Saturday Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 58, VFW Post 1580 and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 529 combined Honor Guard of Hurley. A luncheon will follow in the church basement. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Iron Belt.
