Obituary for Laura Jean Niemi-Steinmetz

Laura J Niemi-Steinmetz quietly entered her eternal life on December 6, 2023, with her family by her side.

Laura married Kaarlo Niemi on April 7, 1951, until his passing on February 14, 2008.
On February 14, 2021, she married John Steinmetz. Sadly, he passed away on December 7, 2021

After earning her high school diploma in 1969 and then obtaining her associate degree in bookkeeping, she helped Kaarlo in his Mason contracting business, was also a medical escort through Gogebic Community Action, and was a housekeeper in which she was employed for fifteen years with Kaarlo as a housekeeper of chalets at Big Powderhorn housing association. Mom was a soloist through Zion Lutheran Church and Little Finland for sixty-five years. Laura enjoyed and did many things: sewing, mending, knitting, crocheting, and canning. She enjoyed playing Smear, Cribbage, and Scrabble, Completing crossword and word search puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and old western movies on T.V. She most enjoyed dancing or sharing a coffee and a meal with a family or friend. She honestly looked forward to holidays and celebrations.

Also preceding Laura were her parents, Albin and Lempi (Kapyaho) Huvila, two sisters, Eleanor and Linda, and three brothers, Raymond, Earl and Victor.

Surviving her are her six children, Paul A. and Kathleen Niemi, Christine and Timothy Popko, Aileen and Melvin Seeger, Timothy and Tina Marie Niemi, Nathan and Michelle Niemi, and Eric and Jennifer Niemi.
Laura celebrated her 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Many notable people called her friend, mom, grandma, grandmama, great grandma, and G.G.

Laura will be remembered for her Finnish squeaky cheese and homemade cinnamon rolls at church for social time. She always had an incredible smile and a good handshake, if not a hug!

A celebration of life will be held June 8th, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church at 11 A.M.--
