Obituary for John M. Amo

John M. Amo, 85, of Ironwood,
died Thursday, July 7, 2011, in Ironwood.      He was born April 26, 1926, in Rhinelander,
Wis., son of the late V.E. and Esther (Martinson) Amo, and was raised in
Ironwood, where he graduated from L.L. Wright High School in 1943. He was then
drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in France during World War II.      Following his honorable discharge, John
returned to Ironwood and was married to the former Leone M. Gribble on July 19,
1947 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church by the late Msgr. J.B. Moriarity.
They operated the Sunset Food Shop on Sunset Road for
many years.                                                                John later attended Michigan Tech University
in Houghton for three years and was employed at Cliff-Dow Chemical Co. in
Marquette. He and Leone then resided in Manitowish Waters, Wis. for many years,
where John retired as a meatcutter at Beller's Super Value in Woodruff,
Wis. prior to returning to Ironwood.      He was a life member of Ironwood American
Legion Post 5 and a member of Ironwood Lodge 389, Free and Accepted Masons. An
avid bridge player, he was a former member of the Range Duplicate Bridge
Club.      Surviving are his wife Leone, of 63 years;
four sons, Ken, Ft. Worth, Tex., John (Faye), Marquette, Tom (Pat),
Philadelphia, Penn., and Jim (Brook), Livonia; five grandchildren, Bret, Stacy,
Jami, Derek, and Dustin (Kelli); three great-grandchildren, Ryland, Michael and
Hunter; and a brother, David, of Rhinelander.      As per John's wishes, cremation has taken
place and no formal services will be held.      Online condolences may be given to the
