Obituary for James D. Ceccon

James D. Ceccon, 80, of
Ironwood, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, in Ironwood.      He was born June 14, 1930, in Ironwood, son of
the late Domenic and Augusta (Forte) Ceccon, attended Ironwood and St. Ambrose
schools, and graduated from St. Ambrose High School in 1949. He then worked in
the Peterson Mine before being drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1951, serving
two years in Germany during the Korean War.      Following his honorable discharge in June
1953, Jim returned to Ironwood and resumed working in the Peterson Mine until
the mine closed in 1966. He then worked underground at White Pine Copper Co.
until 1968, when he attended Michigan Tech University for one year, becoming a
surveyor. He was employed as a surveyor with the City of Ironwood from 1977 to
his retirement in 1992.      Jim was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic
Church in Ironwood, Ironwood American Legion Post 5, Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 1823, and the Piave Society.   He enjoyed
hunting and fishing and spending time at camp, and pitched horseshoes for the
Piave Club in the Range Horseshoe League for many years. He also played slow and
fast pitch softball in Range area leagues in his younger years. He especially
enjoyed following his grandchildren in all of their sporting
activities.      On Feb. 27, 1954, he was married to June M.
Moisio at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. Msgr. Joseph
Seifert. June survives.      Also surviving are a son, Domenic (Patti),
Ironwood; three daughters, Susan Walseth, Lino Lakes, Minn., Cathy (Roman)
Tauer, Ironwood, and Paula (Kris) Vaughn, North Branch, Minn.; eight
grandchildren, Jesse (Emily) and Joshua Walseth, Brandon and Travis Tauer, Kevin
and Nicole Ceccon, and Erik and Cassandra Vaughn; a brother, Eugene, Ironwood;
two sisters-in-law, Molly Ceccon, Ironwood Township, and Mitzie Moisio, Hoyt
Lakes, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.      Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by a brother, William; sister-in-law, Alice "Bebs" Ceccon; and brother-in-law,
Walter "Babe" Moisio.      Out of respect for Jim's wishes, cremation has
taken place.      Visitation will be held Friday, June 10, from
10 to 11 a.m., in the St. Joseph Family Room at Our Lady of Peace Catholic
Church in Ironwood, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11
a.m., with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant.      Members of the Piave Society will serve as
honorary pallbearers.      Rite of Committal will take place in the St.
Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military honors will be accorded by
the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.      Luncheon will follow in the parish
hall.      Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
