Obituary for Hilda Liuha

Hilda (Peggy) Liuha, age 92, formerly of Wakefield, a resident at Fairview Apartments in Bessemer, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, May 19, 2017, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility. She was the fourth child born to Nick and Alma (Rnn) Hongisto on April21, 1925 in Wakefield. Peggy was a WHS graduate with the Class of 1943. She married William Liuha on March 17, 1948. They had been married for 57 years when Bill passed away on August 15, 2005. Peggy was in the first LPN course affiliated with Northern Michigan University. She worked as an office nurse for Dr. Franck and at the Divine Infant Hospital in Wakefield for many years. Peggy and Bill enjoyed a visit to Finland. They also enjoyed camping and serving as campground managers for several years during the 1980''s. She was a lifetime member of Little Finland, a member of the Wakefield Senior Citizens Club, and a past president of the Wakefield VFW Post 9084 Auxillary. Peggy was a lifetime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bessemer. She especially enjoyed going for walks. Peggy is survived by her son, Robert Liuha of Wakefield. Also surviving is a brother, Norman (Bonnie) Hongisto of Sullivan, Missouri, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian Jarvela Kirchner, Eileen Koski, Pearl Hill Linn; three brothers, Arnold, Richard (Marlene) and Robert (Marilyn) Hongisto, as well as her beloved Pomeranian. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy Steckling officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield.
