Ironwood, Mich. – Gladys June Salmi (Alatalo) 88, of Ironwood, passed away on February 12, 2022, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood surrounded by her devoted daughters, Gayla, Mari, and Lynn.
She was born in Calumet, Michigan on June 5, 1933, the daughter of Otto and Hilma Alatalo. She graduated from high school in Hancock, Michigan, and also attended Gogebic Community College in her 40’s and became an LPN. She worked in nursing in White Pine and Ontonagon, Michigan, and retired in her 70’s.
Gladys enjoyed swimming and last swan in Lake Superior at 80 years old.
She was the center of her family and was a wonderful cook and baker.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Gayla Salmi of Ashland, Wisconsin, Mari Salmi of Texas and Lynn Coron of Ironwood; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Hilma Alatalo; sister, Joyce Keskitalo; foster brother, Paulie Knopus; Roy Salmi (married 34 years); and sons, Fred and Frank Salmi.
