Obituary for Gary Edward Oman

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dad and grandpa, Gary Edward Oman “Big O”. Gary, age 62, passed away unexpectedly in his home on April 21, 2022.

Gary was born on July 8, 1959, to the late Raymond “Ray” and Joan (O’leary) Oman of Montreal, Wisconsin. Gary was a J.E. Murphy Hurley High School graduate in 1977, where he also had a great love for basketball. Following high school, Gary joined the US Army and served for 3.5 years as a sharpshooter and a light wheel vehicle/power generation mechanic.

In 1982 Gary married Janine Franzoi, and together they had a daughter, Nichole. After they divorced Gary moved to the Twin Cities where he married Dawn Buchaniec; and together, they had a son, Stanley “Stan”. They relocated back to the area, and Gary then began working at Wayne Nasi Construction where he worked until he retired in January 2022 from being a lifelong construction carpenter.

Gary lived life to the fullest through life’s simple pleasures; he was an avid sports fan. He had a great love for the Minnesota Vikings, Wisconsin Badgers, and Minnesota Twins; and he loved both watching golf on tv and playing the sport. He enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheeling, and many side jobs for his friends. Gary had a great love for his many friends, and he looked forward to his “man’s nights”.

Gary left behind his daughter, Nichole (Mike) Burdick of Cedar Lake, Indiana; his son; Stanley “Stan” (Kayla Spychalla) Oman of Bayport, Minnesota, 6 granddaughters, Cayley and Alayah Zanella, Brooklynn and Mikenna Burdick, Jocelaine and Aspen Oman; 2 grandsons, Levi and Shelton Burdick; brothers, Raymond “Ray” Oman and Michael “Mike” Oman; sister-in-law, Kristine Oman of Peterson, Minnesota; and many wonderful friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Joan Oman; his sister, Jill Oman; his grandparents, Stan and Fran Oman; and several close friends.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, June 4th from 10 a.m. until the time of his memorial service at 11 a.m. at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home in Ironwood, MI. A burial service will be held at Sunset Acres Cemetery with full military honors. A Celebration of Life will be held at one of Gary’s favorite hangouts, The Hideaway in Iron Belt, Wisconsin.

The family has chosen McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home of Ironwood to honor Gary’s legacy of life. You can leave a condolence or a tribute at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com
