Obituary for Eva M. Johnson

Eva M. Johnson, 82, of
Ironwood, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, in Ironwood.      The former Eva M. Strand was born Feb. 3,
1928, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Erick and Lempi (Stolt) Strand, attended
Ironwood schools, and graduated from  Luther L. Wright High School in 1946. She
then attended cosmetology school in Iron Mountain and was employed as a
hairdresser in Ironwood for several years.      She was married to David R. Johnson on May 24,
1952 at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood. Together, they raised their
family. David preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1973.      Following the death of her husband, Eva worked
as a nurse's aide at Josephson Nursing Home in Ironwood. She then attended the
two-year nursing program at Gogebic Community College, becoming a licensed
practical nurse and working at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield
for many years, retiring in March of 1988. In her retirement, she worked at
the Grand View Clinic for several years.      Eva was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in
Ironwood,  the Salem Quilters, and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of
America. She was also a member of the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary, Ironwood
Historical Society, and the Range Smear League. She loved to knit and read, and
enjoyed playing bridge and antiquing. David and Eva were also foster parents to
many children throughout the years.      Surviving are three sons, David 'Swede"
(Laurie Valento), River Falls, Wis., Leslie (Billie), Forest Lake, Minn., and
Keith "Beans" (Pam), Ironwood; three daughters, Connie (Bruce) Johnson, Kansas
City, Mo., Beth (Doug) Allen, Farmington, Maine, and Chris (Tom) Bergquist,
Bessemer; ten grandchildren, Justin Merten, Ham Lake, Minn., Nichole Merten,
Marquette, Lukas, Rebecca and Joshua Johnson, all of Kansas City, Greg Allen,
Boston, Mass., Meredith and Hannah Allen, both of Farmington, Brett Johnson,
Vail, Colo., and Max Johnson, Ironwood; a sister-in-law, Elvie Strand, Ironwood;
and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.      Besides her parents and husband, Eva was
preceded in death by brothers, Walfred and Robert Strand; and sisters, Eleanor
Heikkila, Ruth Strand and Jean Ryan.      Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 7,
at 11 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Bill Jacobson,
pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield, officiating.      Committal will take place at the church, with
luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall.      Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood.      Relatives and friends may call at the church
from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Monday.      Pallbearers will be Eva's grandsons, to
include Justin Merten, Lukas Johnson, Greg Allen, Brett and Max Johnson, and
Joshua Johnson.      Memorial contributions may be made to Salem
