Obituary for Bradford John Matson

Bradford John Matson, 52, passed away on August 16, 2019 in Sherman Township, Wisconsin.      Brad was born November 3, 1966, in Port Huron, Michigan. He grew up in Waukesha, Wisconsin, graduated from Waukesha North High School & University of Wisconsin, River Falls. After college, he worked for the Department of Natural Resources out of Baldwin and Park Falls. He was then offered a journeyman plumber position in Vail, Colorado and lived there for eight years. Brad moved back to Wisconsin in 2002 and became a self-employed “jack of all trades” mostly in the Springstead area. Brad became a volunteer fireman with the Town of Sherman and formed the Sherman First Responders. He was the director of this group for 13 years and ran with the Mercer Ambulance.     Brad was an organ donor which will benefit over 70 people.     In 2014, Brad was elected to the Iron County Board of Supervisors representing Sherman District 15, which he held at the time of his death. His county responsibilities included the County Extension and LEPC which oversees emergency management, preparedness, and planning. He chaired the Transportation Committee and vice-chaired Zoning. He chaired the Board of Health and the Land Conservation Committee. He served on the 11-county Northwest area of the Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation Association Board of Directors for the State of Wisconsin. He also served on another Land and Water Board for the Department of Agriculture in Madison.      Brad's love for the outdoors was evident by his many years out west chasing elk and trout as well as his many trips following his bird dogs through a cut cornfield or an aspen grove. He truly loved, understood and respected nature. He was at home on the water or in the field. He enjoyed helping others to fish, hunt, gather wild rice, berries, and maple syrup. He could turn all he harvested into a delicious feast. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend to all including his beloved dogs, Sabrina, Annie, and Porter.      Surviving are Brad's parents, Fred and Carol Matson, Springstead; brother, Brian (Sandi), DeForest, WI; niece, Mackenzi Matson, DeForest, WI; aunts and uncles, Sharon and Bill Walbrun, Waukesha, WI, and Sue Gauthier, Munising, MI; and many cousins.      A Celebration of Life for Bradford John Matson will be held on Saturday, August 31 at the Sherman Town Hall on Highway 182 in Springstead. Visitation will be at 3 PM with a Memorial Service at 4 PM followed by a meal at 5 PM.      In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated toward camp scholarships to the Iron County Land and Water Conservation Camp which takes place every summer for high school students.
